HOW TO USE SELF-TOUCH TO REGULATE YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM

Your nervous system is constantly responding to your environment.
Stress, pressure, and overstimulation can leave your body in a state of tension… often without you even realizing it.
But there is a simple, accessible way to bring your body back into balance:
Your own touch.
Self-touch is one of the most powerful tools for nervous system regulation because it communicates directly with the body’s sense of safety.
When you place your hands on your body with intention, you send a signal: *you are safe here.*
Here are a few simple practices you can begin with:
1. Hand to Heart + Breath
Place one hand over your heart and one on your stomach.
Take slow, deep breaths.
Feel the rise and fall beneath your hands.
This grounds you instantly.
2. Gentle Arm or Neck Hold
Wrap one hand around your opposite arm or gently hold the back of your neck.
Apply soft, steady pressure.
Allow your body to relax into your own touch.
This can reduce anxiety and bring a sense of calm.
3. Slow Body Awareness Touch
Using your hands, slowly trace areas where you feel tension… your shoulders, chest, or thighs.
Move slowly. Stay present. Breathe.
This is not about fixing anything.
It is about noticing.
Over time, these practices build a deeper relationship between you and your body.
You begin to respond instead of react.
You begin to soften instead of brace.
And most importantly… you learn that safety is something you can create within yourself.
Your hands are not just hands.
They are tools for healing.
Use them with intention.
